Models and Services

Model 1
There is no requirement that specifies a school health services model. There are several different models for the delivery of school health services depending on the needs and preference of the School. This may include services for students with disabilities and special health care needs and the traditional first aid, medication administration, and screening services. School makes a decision about what level of health services they need. Once they determine the needs of the school community, we will then help them to choose from the following models the one that best suit their situation.

1. Screening and Referral by a Medical Team. This is the traditional model that usually consists of a medical team who provide the following health services:

♦ Assessment of the health needs of students and staff.
♦ Health screening.
♦ Health promotion and disease prevention activities.
♦ Individual health education and counseling.
♦ First aid and emergency care.

School’s commitment with this model

1. All students will pay an amount each for the medical screening.
2. School will provide a space for the screening.
3. Population of students under this model should not be less than 1000.

Model 2
Nurse Practitioners Providing Primary Care

This model expands the direct services provided to the students. In this model, nurse practitioners provide the following comprehensive preventive and primary health care services:

♦ Diagnosis and treatment of a range of health conditions in accordance with treatment protocols established by a supervising physician.
♦ Health screenings.
♦ Assistance to families in visiting appropriate health care providers.
♦ Monitoring chronic illnesses.

The school nurse and unlicensed assistive personnel should be a part of this team to provide the traditional school health services.

School’s commitment with this model

1. All students must be enrolled on national health insurance scheme.
2. All students will pay an amount each term for an administrative cost.
3. School will provide a space for the clinic.
4. Population of students under this model should not be less than 1200.

Model 3
School-Based Clinics Providing Comprehensive Health Care Services

This model provides for the following comprehensive health care services that are to be delivered by an interdisciplinary team made up of physicians or medical assistants, nurses, lab and other health care professionals.
